National partners of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Turkmenistan strengthened their knowledge of the practical application of digital solutions in the context of integrated border management during a two-day training organized by the IOM Office in Ashgabat.
The event brought together representatives of relevant government agencies involved in border management, migration and public security.
The training was conducted with the support of IOM immigration and border management experts from the IOM Regional Office in Vienna for Europe and Central Asia.
Participants explored the use of modern digital platforms to improve the collection, exchange and analysis of information, strengthen inter-agency cooperation and coordination, and support decision-making in a cross-border context through digital tools, considering the experience of some countries in Europe and Central Asia, as well as prospects for the digitalization of migration and border management in the context of integrated border management amid growing population mobility and cross-border processes.
In particular, participants were introduced to IOM digital solutions, including DESC (Data Exchange Solution for Counter-Smuggling), eRCMS (Electronic Readmission Case Management System), MIDAS (Migration Information and Data Analysis System) and online visa systems and how these tools can contribute to more timely data exchange, coordinated action and more effective management of migration processes at border crossing points.
The training also placed strong emphasis on practical exercises. In group exercises, participants conducted a situational analysis of preparedness for crisis scenarios using a SWOT approach, including possible cases of mass arrivals.
This work provided an opportunity to discuss the division of roles among the relevant agencies, agree on interaction algorithms and identify possible areas for further strengthening national response mechanisms.
The event was held under the framework of IOM’s regional project, “Comprehensive Action Plan for Afghanistan and Neighbouring Countries”, which aims to support strengthening of the socio-economic resilience of Afghan and local communities, as well as national capacities in early preparedness and emergency response. /// nCa, 15 June 2026 (in cooperation with IOM Turkmenistan)
