On 5 December 2023, during the 18th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO, which is being held in Kasane, Republic of Botswana from 5-9 December 2023, the nomination of Turkmenistan «Art of Akhal-Teke horse breeding and traditions of horses’ decoration» has been inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, Embassy of Turkmenistan to France reports.
The Turkmen side is represented at the session by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Turkmenistan to the French Republic, the Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to UNESCO Maksat Chariev and the Executive Secretary of the National Commission of Turkmenistan to UNESCO Chinar Rustemova.
Ambassador during his speech, emphasized that the Akhal-Teke horse, renowned for its grace, strength, and endurance, has been an integral part of cultural heritage of Turkmenistan for centuries. It is not merely a breed; it embodies the spirit of our people, symbolizing the unity of our past, present, and future. The traditions associated with Akhal-Teke horse breeding, as well as the meticulous artistry involved in decorating these majestic creatures, have been passed down through generations, forming an inseparable bond with our identity, said Ambassador.
In Turkmenistan, the preservation of the Akhal-Teke horse breed holds great importance at the state level. A significant role for preserving and enhancing the global reputation of the Akhal-Teke horse breeding belongs to the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. Currently, under the leadership of the President of Turkmenistan, national horse breeding has been elevated to unprecedented heights. Comprehensive measures have been undertaken to develop its infrastructure, intensify international cooperation in this field, promote equestrian sports, and preserve national traditions of horseback riding, emphasized Ambassador.
