Bilateral trade between the United Kingdom and Turkmenistan reached £102 million in the 12 months to the end of September 2025 (four quarters to Q3 2025), marking a 22.9% increase (£19 million) from the previous year, according to the latest UK government factsheet released on 26 March 2026.
The growth was propelled almost entirely by a strong performance in UK exports, which jumped 61.4% (£35 million) to £92 million. In contrast, UK imports from Turkmenistan fell sharply by 61.5% (£16 million) to just £10 million.
Services dominated UK exports to Turkmenistan, contributing £56 million (60.9% of the total), up 55.6% (£20 million). Goods exports totalled £36 million (39.1%), rising 71.4% (£15 million). On the import side, goods made up the vast majority (£9 million, 90%), while services were minimal at £1 million.
The UK recorded an overall trade surplus of £82 million with Turkmenistan in this period, compared to £31 million a year earlier. This included a £27 million surplus in goods trade (reversing a small deficit) and a £55 million services surplus.
Key Commodities in Goods Trade
Top UK goods exports to Turkmenistan in the period included:
- Miscellaneous electrical goods (capital) — £7.5 million
- Aircraft — £7.4 million
- General industrial machinery (intermediate) — £4.8 million
- Other chemicals — £2.8 million
- General industrial machinery (capital) — £1.9 million
Imports from Turkmenistan were led by inorganic chemicals (£3.5 million), metal ores and scrap (£3.4 million), and aircraft (£2.4 million), though overall import volumes declined significantly.
Broader Bilateral Relations
Recent developments indicate growing engagement beyond trade statistics. In early 2026, the foreign ministries of both countries signed a cooperation programme for 2026–2027. A UK–Turkmenistan Climate Finance Forum was held in Ashgabat in March 2026, highlighting opportunities in sustainable finance, green investment, and climate resilience. Turkmenistan has also invited British businesses to explore opportunities in energy and transport infrastructure, including the Middle Corridor.
Around 30 enterprises with British capital are reportedly active in Turkmenistan, underscoring quiet but steady commercial ties.
The full factsheet is available on the UK Department for Business and Trade website and will next be updated in May 2026.
