Ashgabat, 2 September 2026 – A National Seminar is taking place in Ashgabat under the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility’s (GEF), “Global Programme for Supporting the Update of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and the Preparation of the 7th National Report on the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD),” implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan.
The main objective of the seminar is to present and discuss the draft National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan of Turkmenistan for 2026–2035, as well as the process of preparing the country’s reporting under the CBD.
The two-day seminar brings together representatives of key national ministries and agencies, including the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan, as well as other relevant ministries, scientific institutions, the private sector and civil society. This broad representation reflects the importance of engaging all stakeholders in biodiversity conservation and creating conditions for the effective implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).
During the seminar, participants were presented with the draft updated NBSAP of Turkmenistan for 2026–2035, as well as the national reports prepared as part of the country’s obligations under the CBD: the 7th National Report under the CBD, the report under the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, and the report under the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources.
One of the key objectives of the seminar is to gather feedback, comments and recommendations from various partners who were familiarized with the draft updated NBSAP of Turkmenistan for 2026–2035 in advance. The feedback received will be used to further refine the analytical materials and inform the final document for agreement with relevant national partners and its subsequent submission to the CBD Secretariat.

About the Programme
The “UNDP/GEF Global Programme for Supporting the Update of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans and the Preparation of 7th National CBD Reports” is an initiative funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) that provides financial and technical support to 139 developing and transition economy countries in updating their NBSAPs in line with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, as well as preparing and submitting their 7th national reports under the Convention on Biological Diversity. ///nCa, 2 September 2026 ( in cooperation with UNDP Turkmenistan)
