A contract for the supply of Russian gas to Uzbekistan and a Roadmap for preparing the nation’s gas transportation system for the acceptance and transportation of Russian pipeline gas were signed last week on the sidelines of the 26th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
UzGasTrade JSC and Gazprom Export LLC concluded the gas purchase and sale agreement for a period of 2 years. The documents were inked by the Uzbekistan minister of energy of Zhurabek Mirzamakhmudov and Chairman of the Gazprom Alexey Miller.
According to Uzbekistan’s energy ministry, a deal was developed entirely on commercial terms and is one of the steps taken to partially meet the country’s growing natural gas demand while also ensuring a steady supply of energy during the autumn and winter.
The supplies will start on 1 October 2023 with 9 million cubic meters per day. The annual volume of supplies is about 2.8 billion cubic meters.
Natural gas prices are agreed based on market prices in the region, as well as current prices in Uzbekistan.
Earlier natural gas was supplied to Russia in transit via Kazakhstan through the Central Asia – Center main gas pipeline, and it will be switched to reverse mode.
The above-mentioned Roadmap provides for several measures to prepare Uzbek gas transport system for gas deliveries. They include:
- construction of a new gas measuring station on the territory of Uzbekistan,

- 11 units of gas receiving equipment will be overhauled and restored
- 22 kilometers of new main gas pipelines will be built
- 56 kilometers of gas pipelines will be repaired
All activities are set to complete by September.
