On 6 June 2023, UNESCO headquarters hosted an event dedicated to the Russian Language Day organized by the Permanent Missions of the Russian Federation, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Republic of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
The program of the event included the opening ceremony, followed by a concert with the participation of artists and masters of the arts of culture, as well as the screening of the feature film “Amanat”, the Embassy of Turkmenistan in France reports.
The opening ceremony was attended by Igor Barinov, Head of the Federal Agency for Nationalities of the Russian Federation, Genc Seiti, Director for External Relations and Interaction with UNESCO Delegations, as well as some Ambassadors and representatives of Permanent Missions of CIS countries to UNESCO.
In his speech, Ambassador Maksat Charyev noted that Turkmenistan, being a country with a rich historical heritage and cultural diversity, has always appreciated the importance of multilingualism. For many decades, the Russian language has played an important role in Turkmenistan, becoming a bridge between peoples and cultures.
The Russian language is an integral part of the educational system of Turkmenistan, it is taught on a par with the Turkmen and English languages starting from elementary school. All this makes Turkmenistan a multilingual country where citizens can speak several languages and use them in different contexts, the Ambassador stressed.
Russian Language Day, as set out in the decision of the UN Department of Public Information (2010), is celebrated on 6 June – the birthday of the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. This date was announced as part of the program for the support and development of multilingualism and cultural diversity. One of the goals of this program is to maintain equality of all six official languages of the United Nations: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. ///nCa, 7 June 2023
