A lecture titled “Independent neutral Turkmenistan is the homeland of purposeful winged horses” was held at UC Leuven in Belgium, featuring the Ambassador of Turkmenistan, renowned blogger and polyglot Yuji Beleza, as well as Central Asia researcher Derya Soysal.
In his address, the Ambassador presented to students the path of Turkmenistan’s development as an independent state, noting that after gaining independence in 1991, the country faced a key task: to establish itself as a full-fledged and responsible actor in international relations. He emphasized that Turkmenistan consciously chose a path of independent development, avoiding becoming a sphere of influence and instead building its foreign policy on the principles of neutrality, equality, and mutual respect.
Special attention was given to the importance of national identity. The Ambassador noted that one of the key elements in state-building was the Turkmen language, which became not only the official state language but also the foundation of cultural unity in society. In this context, he highlighted that language is “the voice of a nation,” through which thinking is shaped, values are transmitted, and historical memory is preserved.
The Ambassador also explained the significance of the year’s theme and motto — “Independent Neutral Turkmenistan is the Homeland of Purposeful Winged Horses.” He noted that the image of the Akhal-Teke horse symbolizes strength, endurance, and determination, and that the country continues its development guided by these qualities.
A video presentation on Turkmenistan was shown to the students, showcasing the country’s rich cultural heritage, natural diversity and achievements in socio-economic development, allowing the audience to gain a more comprehensive understanding of modern Turkmenistan.
In his remarks, Yuji Beleza shared his personal journey as a polyglot and content creator, speaking about his approach to language learning and emphasizing that addressing people in their native language creates an atmosphere of trust and mutual understanding. His presentation generated strong interest among students and demonstrated the practical importance of languages in intercultural communication.
Derya Soysal offered an analytical perspective on Central Asia, highlighting the region’s growing role in the global agenda and the importance of strengthening academic and expert dialogue.
The event took place in a lively and interactive atmosphere and was followed by an active Q&A session. During the discussion, the Ambassador underlined that Turkmenistan consistently advocates for peaceful dialogue, based on the belief that regardless of the complexity of international issues, there is always space for diplomatic solutions.
At the conclusion of the lecture, participants were invited to taste traditional Turkmen cuisine, offering them an additional opportunity to experience the country’s cultural traditions.
In closing, participants noted that such events go beyond a traditional academic lecture, becoming a platform for live interaction, exchange of ideas and mutual understanding. It is through such open dialogue that new connections are formed, interest in culture is strengthened, and a foundation is created for future cooperation between Turkmenistan and the younger generation of Europe. ///Embassy of Turkmenistan to Belgium
