The Delegation of the European Union to Turkmenistan, in cooperation with the Nature Protection Society of Turkmenistan, implemented a pilot Eco-Mentoring project at Secondary Specialised School No. 135 in Ashgabat within the framework of the global #ForOurPlanet Global Campaign 2026.
Beginning from 29 April, a team of 23 volunteers delivered 25 interactive lessons for students in grades 5, 6, and 7. The lessons introduced students to key environmental topics, including the impact of human activity on nature, ecological habits, responsible consumption, and the importance of reducing waste through reuse.
The sessions combined short lectures with interactive group tasks. One of the activities, “Give an item a second life”, encouraged students to work in teams and identify different ways to reuse everyday objects. Through this exercise, students explored how small actions can help reduce waste and extend the life of materials.
Following each lesson, volunteers presented the class with an indoor plant as a symbolic gift and a reminder of the importance of caring for nature in everyday life.
On 2 May, the initiative continued with a tree-planting activity on the school grounds. The event brought together students, volunteers, staff of the Delegation and the school administration. Participants were actively involved in planting trees and contributing to the improvement of the school environment.
In addition, the Delegation provided drip irrigation equipment to support the sustainable maintenance of the school’s green areas and help ensure more efficient water use.
The Eco-Mentoring pilot project provided both students and volunteers with practical knowledge and experience. At the end of the initiative, volunteers received certificates in recognition of their contribution. More importantly, they gained knowledge that they can continue to apply and share with others.
The project demonstrated how environmental education, youth participation and practical action can come together to encourage more responsible habits and strengthen care for nature among young people in Turkmenistan.
The Delegation of the European Union to Turkmenistan will continue its cooperation with School No. 135 to support greening efforts and promote positive environmental practices. ///The EU Delegation to Turkmenistan, 11 May 2026
