President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, during a recent cabinet meeting, addressed Türkiye’s long-standing relationship with the European Union, framing his remarks less as a critique than as a call for a more honest and forward-looking partnership.
The president argued that a fully integrated Türkiye would substantially strengthen Europe’s capacity to act as a coherent global power, and that the two sides share a mutual interest in deepening ties. He emphasised that Türkiye’s constructive engagement with European institutions has been consistent, and expressed hope that this goodwill would be met in kind.
“It is our sincere hope that decision-makers in Europe will develop sincere, genuine relations with Türkiye on an equal footing,” Erdoğan said, adding that the benefits of such a relationship would extend across the European continent, of which he described Türkiye as an integral part.
The remarks touched on broader geopolitical shifts — namely the emergence of a more multipolar international order — suggesting that both Türkiye and Europe have reason to adapt their relationship to a rapidly changing world.
The president’s tone, while firm, was largely framed around opportunity rather than grievance, and he expressed confidence that a constructive path remains available to both sides.///nCa, 5 May 2026
