National Leader of the Turkmen People Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov congratulated President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on the successful holding of the first elections to the Kurultai, the country’s newly established unicameral parliament. The issue was discussed during a telephone conversation held on Tuesday, 25 August.
The elections were the first to be held following Kazakhstan’s transition to a new parliamentary architecture. The Kurultai is intended to serve as the country’s highest representative body exercising legislative power, making its formation an important stage in the reform of Kazakhstan’s political system. The new model provides for a more compact and institutionally defined structure of representative government.
“Turkmenistan regards the outcome of these elections as a wise decision and a consolidated expression of the will of the people of Kazakhstan, as well as your personal political victory and the result of the successful reforms carried out under your leadership in the country’s political, economic and social life,” the Turkmenistan State News Agency (TDH) quoted Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov as saying.
In turn, Tokayev emphasized that he highly values Turkmenistan’s support and the personal attention paid by the National Leader to the parliamentary elections, which he described as an important historic event for Kazakhstan.
Tokayev also highlighted the work of Turkmen observers who monitored the preparation and conduct of the elections and assessed their results as being fully in line with national legislation and international standards.
The President of Kazakhstan expressed confidence that the parliaments of the two countries would continue to maintain close cooperation and contribute to further strengthening Kazakhstan–Turkmenistan relations.
Five political parties secured seats in the new parliament following the Kurultai elections. The Adilet Party won 110 of the 145 seats, giving it an absolute majority in the new legislature. The remaining seats were distributed among the Nationwide Social Democratic Party (8 seats), the Auyl Party (10 seats), the Democratic Party of Kazakhstan “Ak Zhol” (8 seats), and the Respublica Party (9 seats). According to Kazakhstan’s Central Election Commission, voter turnout stood at 74.08%. ///nCa, 26 August 2026
