Mary, 15 October 2026 — The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Turkmenistan is conducting a series of training seminars aimed at strengthening national capacity in energy-efficient and sustainable construction. The activities are taking place at the State Energy Institute of Turkmenistan (SEIT) in Mary as part of the UNDP project “Developing National Capacity through Improving Regulatory Environment towards Energy Efficient and Sustainable Building Sector,” funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
The series of seminars began on 7 October with a lecture on international experience in introducing energy-efficient technologies in the construction sector and continues from 8 to 23 October with a training seminar on the development of near-zero energy buildings.

The seminars bring together SEIT faculty and students, specialists from the Scientific and Production Centre for Renewable Energy Sources, as well as specialists from the departments of the Mary City Municipality.
Participants are exploring international experience in applying modern energy-efficiency solutions, approaches to developing near-zero energy buildings, energy-efficient building certification systems, and opportunities to apply such solutions considering Turkmenistan’s climatic conditions.
Attention is being given to the practical application of solar energy and other renewable energy technologies, energy-efficient engineering solutions and insulation, as well as approaches to conducting energy audits of buildings.

Participants are also visiting SEIT facilities and the production base of the Scientific and Production Centre for Renewable Energy Sources to learn about existing solar- and wind-based energy generation systems and explore their potential application in energy-efficient construction.
“Training in the operation of renewable energy-based generation systems lays a solid foundation for developing the competencies required to commission and effectively operate such systems. In this way, GEIT trains personnel in anticipation of trends in the national electric power market,” said Alexey Zakharov, UNDP International Expert.

“Green building certification plays an important role in promoting sustainable construction principles and advancing an energy-efficient construction sector. As working with such systems requires specialized knowledge, today’s seminar, focusing on certification standards and international experience in applying energy-efficient solutions, provided students and faculty of the State Energy Institute of Turkmenistan with a valuable opportunity to learn about modern approaches and international practices in this field,” said Ilze Purina, UNDP International Expert.
The initiative is implemented by UNDP with financial support from the GEF, in partnership with the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan and the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan, with the participation of the State Energy Institute of Turkmenistan and the Scientific and Production Centre for Renewable Energy Sources. ///nCa, 15 October 2026 (in cooperation with UNDP Turkmenistan)
