On 27 April 2026, a consultative meeting was held at the UN building, organized by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Turkmenistan in cooperation with the Mejlis and the Institute of State, Law and Democracy of Turkmenistan.
The main objective of the meeting was to discuss the results of a gender-sensitive review of Turkmenistan’s current legislative and regulatory legal acts concerning the protection and rights of women. The event was held as part of the implementation of the Roadmap for the implementation of the Concluding Observations of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), as well as the 2026-2027 Work Plan on “Assistance in strengthening the system and mechanisms for promoting gender equality in legislation,” signed between UNFPA and the Mejlis of Turkmenistan.
The discussion was attended by representatives of the relevant committees of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan, the Supreme Court, the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Ministries of Adalat, Internal Affairs, Labour and Social Protection of the Population. Experts from the Ombudsman’s Office, the Institute of State, Law and Democracy of Turkmenistan, and the Hyakimlik of Ashgabat city also joined the meeting.
During the consultations, participants reviewed the analysis of the country’s current legal framework regarding its compliance with international standards. Special attention was paid to developing practical recommendations for further improvement of regulatory acts to ensure women’s rights more effectively. The program of the meeting was based on open cooperation and constructive dialogue between national experts and representatives of key government agencies to form a unified vision for legal reforms in this field. /// nCa, 28 April 2026 (in cooperation with UNFPA, Turkmenistan)
