From 22 August to 28 August, the city of Turkmenabad welcomed 166 chess players from across the country for the latest stage of the Turkmenistan Chess Federation’s Grand Prix series—an event that continues to elevate the nation’s presence on the international chess scene.
The tournament followed a nine-round Swiss system with a time control of 90 minutes per player, plus a 30-second increment per move starting from the first. Rated by international standards, the competition holds significance not only within Turkmenistan but also on the global chess calendar.
The competition drew 100 participants in the open category and 66 in the women’s division, reflecting the growing depth and diversity of Turkmenistan’s chess community.

Chess in Turkmenistan is experiencing a dynamic rise, with players demonstrating increasing competitiveness both nationally and abroad. The Grand Prix series continues with upcoming stages in Dashoguz, Turkmenbashi, and Mary—each expected to deliver high-level play and spirited rivalry.
