President Serdar Berdimuhamedov issued a message to the country’s older generation on the International Day of Older Persons, describing respect for elders as a national principle that dates back millennia and supports continuity between generations.
In the address, directed to “respected elders” and “dear mothers,” the president said the day is observed in Turkmenistan alongside the international community. He said this year’s celebrations fall within the 2026 designation “Independent Neutral Turkmenistan – Homeland of Purposeful Winged Steeds,” which also marks the 35th anniversary of independence.
Policy aims. The president said the main goal of the country’s domestic and foreign policy is to ensure a prosperous, peaceful and secure life for citizens, with particular reference to older people and to youth. He said long-term, innovation-based programs and reforms across sectors of the economy are being implemented toward that end.
Role of elders. The president said the counsel and life experience of older citizens underpin education and help strengthen social unity and the upbringing of younger generations in what he called a spirit of patriotism and humanism.
Halk Maslahaty and awards. Berdimuhamedov noted that decisions on national development taken at a recent session of the Halk Maslahaty, held ahead of the independence anniversary, drew on proposals from elders. He said representatives of the older generation were awarded the title “Hormatly il ýaşulusy” for their contribution to national unity and the moral upbringing of youth, while mothers received the “Zenan kalby” order.
Events. Song and music celebrations and cultural events are being held in cities and villages across the country, the president said.
Foreign policy references. Berdimuhamedov said Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality, peacefulness and good-neighborliness are recognized and supported internationally, and that these principles enhance the country’s international standing. He also referred to ongoing construction of modern cities, villages and industrial complexes using advanced technologies as evidence of national development.
The president credited the initiatives of Halk Maslahaty Chairman and National Leader Arkadag Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, along with guidance from elders, with supporting societal unity and peace. He closed by wishing older citizens good health and success.
The International Day of Older Persons is observed annually on October 1 and was established by the United Nations General Assembly. /// nCa, 1 October 2026
