Every year on 31 August, the international community will celebrate the International Day of Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence.
This date was established in a United Nations General Assembly resolution adopted at the initiative of Tajikistan. The observance will begin in 2027. A total of 144 member states voted in favor of the resolution.
The choice of 31 August as the International Day holds historical significance, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan.
On this day in 1955, American scientists proposed the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence — a landmark scientific initiative widely associated with the establishment of AI as a distinct academic discipline and the coining of the term “artificial intelligence.”
According to the foreign ministry of Tajikistan, the adoption of this resolution builds upon the country’s ongoing efforts to promote the international agenda on artificial intelligence and the responsible use of emerging technologies.
The resolution expands on earlier proposals put forward by Dushanbe, including the UN General Assembly resolution titled “The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Creating New Opportunities for Sustainable Development in Central Asia.”
The International Day will create an annual global platform to draw international attention to the development, deployment, and governance of safe, secure, and trustworthy artificial intelligence, as well as to promote international cooperation and the exchange of best practices in this domain.
The resolution calls on UN agencies, programs, and funds — including the International Telecommunication Union, the UN Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies, the UN Technology Bank for Least Developed Countries, and UNESCO — to support member states in developing AI capacity-building programs.
The Ministry emphasizes that the adoption of the resolution underscores Tajikistan’s commitment to advancing international cooperation aimed at developing and applying AI to foster sustainable development for the benefit of all humanity. ///nCa, 2 September 2026
