From 11 to 13 August 2026, a joint practical training session on information exchange in maritime transport took place at the international seaports of Turkmenbashi and Alyat, the State Customs Service of Turkmenistan reports.
The event brought together members of port control units from Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan. It was organized by the UNODC Regional Office for Central Asia under the joint UNODC-World Customs Organization (WCO) Global Passenger and Cargo Control Programme.
The training course, conducted by WCO experts, launched on 11 August in Turkmenistan, continued directly aboard a vessel during its Caspian Sea transit, and concluded on 13 August at the Azerbaijani port of Alyat.
The primary objectives of the initiative were to boost international cargo throughput across the Caspian Sea, suppress illicit goods trafficking, and minimize associated risks.
Additionally, the training aimed to enhance specialist qualifications, improve operational data-sharing skills, and strengthen direct interaction between the port complexes of Turkmenbashi and Alyat.
During practical sessions, participants exchanged experience by jointly practicing skills in analyzing shipping documentation and conducting customs inspections of cargo and transport vehicles.
