On 21 May, on the sidelines of the spring session of the Interparliamentary Assembly of CIS Member Nations in St. Petersburg, a meeting was held between the Chairperson of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan, Dunyagozel Gulmanova, and the Chairperson of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, Valentina Matviyenko.
During the talks, V. Matviyenko specifically highlighted Russia’s respect for the neutral status of Turkmenistan and highly praised the consistent support the country provides to the activities of the CIS under its chairmanship of the organization in 2026.
According to Matviyenko, Russian-Turkmen cooperation is steadily developing in line with a strategic partnership, with the tone and substance of bilateral interaction being set by the leaders of the two countries. “A continuous political dialogue is underway at the highest level, as well as at the levels of governments and parliaments. We remain in constant personal contact with you,” the Speaker of the Federation Council emphasized.
The Speakers underscored the importance of further exchanging experience in lawmaking, intensifying the work of interparliamentary friendship groups, providing mutual support for initiatives on international parliamentary platforms, and holding joint events aimed at organizing meetings and consultations at the parliamentary level.
The Head of the Federation Council extended warm wishes to the National Leader of the Turkmen people and Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, noting his personal contribution to the development of interparliamentary cooperation and his traditional participation in the International Economic Forum “Russia – Islamic World: KazanForum.”
Chairperson of the Mejlis D. Gulmanova invited Matviyenko to visit Turkmenistan to participate in international and parliamentary events to be held in the “Avaza” National Tourist Zone. These meetings will be organized as part of Turkmenistan’s current chairmanship of the CIS, as well as ahead of the next Consultative Meeting of the Heads of State of Central Asia and Azerbaijan. ///nCa, 22 May 2026
