On Monday, 11 May 2026, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov received Tan Sri Mohd Hassan Marican, the Chair of the Policy Advisory Committee to the Prime Minister, along with Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik, President and Group CEO of Petronas, and Mohd Jukris bin Abdul Wahab, Executive Vice President and CEO of Upstream at Petronas.
The current visit is timed to a significant milestone—the 30th anniversary of cooperation between Turkmenistan and Petronas. President Serdar Berdimuhamedov emphasized that developing relations with Malaysia is a priority of Turkmenistan’s foreign policy. Interaction between the two nations is consistently built on the principles of mutual respect and equality.
Over three decades of joint work, significant results have been achieved. Large-scale hydrocarbon production projects have been implemented, including operations in the Turkmen sector of the Caspian Sea. The company has made a substantial contribution to training highly qualified national personnel for the country’s oil and gas industry. Furthermore, strengthening ties at the highest level has laid the foundation for a trust-based dialogue in the political and cultural spheres.
The primary practical outcome of this visit will be the signing of a Protocol on Commercial Terms between the “Türkmennebit” State Concern and “Petronas Carigali (Turkmenistan) Sdn. Bhd.” This document is designed to establish the legal and economic frameworks for the further implementation of joint projects.
The leadership of Petronas reaffirmed its commitment to the unconditional fulfillment of all partner obligations, noting Turkmenistan’s high investment potential.
The President confirmed Turkmenistan’s commitment to traditional mutually beneficial relations with Malaysia and expressed the country’s readiness to consider specific proposals for cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
The program for the Malaysian delegation’s visit to Ashgabat continues, with a series of meetings and negotiations to discuss promising areas of partnership in detail. ///nCa, 12 May 2026
