Çanakkale, in Türkiye’s North Aegean region, effortlessly weaves together history, myth, and nature, offering the legendary ruins of Troy, sun-drenched vineyards, shimmering turquoise coastlines, and serene islands. Yet the city’s most dazzling treasure lies beneath the sparkling waves.
As one of Türkiye’s and the world’s most captivating scuba diving destinations, divers encounter not only vibrant marine life in Çanakkale but also historic shipwrecks, resting gracefully on the seabed, waiting to tell their stories.
At the heart of this subaquatic realm lies the Gallipoli Historical Underwater Park, home to some of the most remarkable underwater relics from World War I (WWI), one of the most significant military confrontations of the 20th century. Over the decades, Çanakkale’s WWI remnants have been reclaimed by nature, transforming into lively underwater habitats where a unique marine life flourishes in harmony with history. Now, a truly exceptional event will bring these silent witnesses of the past to the global stage.
Beneath the Waves of History

The Gallipoli Wreck Fest – International Underwater Photography Competition, poised to reveal the story of Çanakkale’s war-torn wrecks to the world like never before, is set to take place at the Historical Park between August 29 and September 7, 2025.
Internationally renowned and field-specialist underwater photographers and videographers will journey to Çanakkale to capture the city’s rare underwater fusion of cultural heritage and natural wonder, producing breathtaking imagery that will elevate both the visibility of WWI wrecks and the region’s diving tourism profile.

The competition journey will begin on August 29, as distinguished underwater photographers and videographers from around the world arrive in Türkiye’s bustling metropolis of İstanbul. The next day, participants will transfer to Gallipoli for a grand opening ceremony at Seddülbahir Castle, followed by boat assignments and preparation of diving equipment.
From August 31 to September 3, international competitors will immerse themselves in the pristine waters of the Gallipoli Historical Underwater Park, engaging in four full days of underwater photography amid WWI naval vessels. September 4 will offer opportunities for photo editing and sightseeing, and it is also the day for the final submission of entries.
On September 5, a distinguished jury will evaluate the works, culminating in the Awards Ceremony and Closing Reception. Finally, from September 6 to 7, participants will return to İstanbul, departing with unparalleled images and experiences that bring Çanakkale’s submerged history vividly to life.
The photographs and videos captured during the competition will transcend mere artistry and aesthetic brilliance. The visual storytelling will offer an immersive view of Çanakkale’s past, highlighting the rich tapestry of military history, maritime heritage, and collective cultural memory for audiences worldwide. So, the competition will become more than just a showcase of underwater art; it will also serve as a smart way to sustainably protect cultural heritage and boost Çanakkale’s reputation as a top diving spot worldwide.///nCa, 3 September 2025 (in cooperation with the Embassy of Türkiye to Turkmenistan)
