Table salt produced at the Guvlyduz plant in Guvlymayak, Turkmenbashi district (western Turkmenistan), is a cornerstone of Turkmenistan’s natural wealth.
A flagship enterprise of the Turkmenhimiya State Concern, Guvlyduz extracted nearly 57,364 tons of salt in January-July of 2024, surpassing the year’s target by 1,600 tons.
Possessing over 40 million tons of reserves, Guvlyduz is a regional leader and global top-four producer of table salt.
Notably, Turkmenistan is the sole nation worldwide to provide its entire population with iodized table salt. In 2004, WHO, UNICEF and International Board for Iodine Deficiency Control certified Turkmenistan as a country which achieved universal salt iodization (USI).
The plant’s century-old operations are rooted in the unique Guvly Lake, situated 40 kilometers north of Turkmenbashi on the Caspian Sea. This deposit’s exceptional characteristic is its seasonal brine formation, occurring only in autumn and winter. The remaining year, the lakebed presents a dry, salty expanse, simplifying salt extraction.
The Turkmen government is committed to enhancing the lives of Guvlymayak residents. A new residential complex, designed and built by domestic companies, will feature modern apartments, a school, kindergarten, shopping center, and recreational spaces. ///nCa, 8 August 2024
