Construction of the International Scientific and Clinical Oncology Center in Ashgabat has entered its final stage. On Saturday, 22 August, National Leader of the Turkmen people and Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov personally inspected the progress of construction and the equipment being installed at the new medical complex.
A High-Tech Clinic Driven by Innovation
A major focus of the project is the installation of advanced medical equipment meeting the highest international standards.
The new center will include consulting and surgical departments, functional and radiation diagnostics units, modules of an integrated digital system, endoscopy departments, adult outpatient hematology, general radiotherapy, rehabilitation and recovery services, scientific and clinical dermatology, pediatric outpatient hematology, radiopharmaceutical production facilities and other specialized units.
Much of the equipment installed at the center has no equivalent elsewhere in the region.
Particular attention is being paid to integrating digital technologies and artificial intelligence into medical diagnosis and treatment.
Berdimuhamedov instructed officials to ensure uninterrupted high-speed internet access throughout the center, as well as to establish a unified internal information network and digital services for patients and their relatives. Families are to receive regular updates on patients’ health and other relevant information.
The clinic also features a modern radioactive waste management system. Specialized storage tanks have been installed for liquid radioactive waste, along with technologies designed for its safe treatment and disposal.
Partnership with Germany’s Medical Community
During his visit, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov met leading German specialists — Professor Fritz Spelsberg and Professor Susanne Spelsberg, physicians affiliated with the Ludwig Maximilian University Hospital and a private medical research center in Germany.
They briefed the National Leader on the capabilities and technical specifications of the equipment presented for the prevention and treatment of cancer.
During the meeting, Berdimuhamedov noted Turkmenistan’s productive cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in healthcare, including oncology and the prevention and treatment of serious diseases.
A new Country Framework Programme for 2026–2030 has been developed, setting out priority areas for technical cooperation. The programme will provide a basis for future projects aimed at introducing innovative technologies into nuclear medicine and strengthening safety standards across various sectors.
The German experts praised the technical equipment installed in the center’s departments, noting that many of the systems are being introduced there for the first time.
Following the meeting, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov instructed relevant officials to systematically strengthen and expand cooperation with leading scientific and clinical centers in Germany.
The National Leader also stressed the need for a comprehensive approach to the medical services provided by the International Scientific and Clinical Oncology Center, including cooperation with leading international clinics, advanced training for oncologists, seminars for clinical residents and researchers, and greater involvement of young professionals.
In this context, he highlighted the importance of cooperation between the faculty of Oguz Han Engineering and Technology University and professors from major universities around the world.
Plans for a Specialized Medical Campus
During his inspection of the center under construction, Berdimuhamedov proposed exploring the possibility of establishing a specialized medical campus in the northern part of Ashgabat. The initiative will be submitted to President Serdar Berdimuhamedov.
The International Scientific and Clinical Oncology Center is scheduled to open during celebrations marking Healthcare and Medical Industry Workers’ Day. An international scientific and practical conference addressing current healthcare issues will also be held to coincide with the opening.
