A new religious university is set to open in Arkadag, Turkmenistan. The institution will be established at a madrasa complex currently under construction alongside the city’s new central mosque, following a high-level determination that the facility’s scale and standards meet university-level criteria.
The complex’s mosque has been officially named ‘Arkadagyň Ruhy Metjidi’ (“Spiritual Mosque of Arkadag”). During a progress review, religious representative Y. Khojagulyyev informed the National Leader of the Turkmen people and Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov that the name has been formally registered with the Ministry of Adalat (Justice).
Designed to accommodate up to 30,000 worshippers, the main mosque complex incorporates the madrasa facility.
Khojagulyyev proposed elevating the madrasa into a full university, emphasizing that its infrastructure naturally supports higher education. He noted that the university will align its Islamic studies curriculum with recognized international standards in the Muslim world while instilling traditional spiritual and moral values in youth.
Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov endorsed the initiative, noting that specialized religious universities are a well-established practice globally.
He issued instructions to upgrade the facility’s technical infrastructure and draw on international best practices to ensure high academic standards. The National Leader also instructed officials to coordinate closely with the Muftiyat Administration of Turkmenistan to finalize degree programs and align the curriculum with international standards. /// nCa, 14 August 2026
