On November 3, 2026, the white-marble avenues of Ashgabat hosted a high-level diplomatic summit reflecting growing ties between Central Asia and Central Europe.
At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov received a Austrian delegation led by Christine Schwarz-Fuchs, Chairperson of the Federal Council of the Austrian Parliament. The visit highlighted expanding interparliamentary ties, joint commitments to international neutrality, and a commercial push involving dozens of Austrian companies seeking market opportunities in Central Asia.
Shared Principles: Neutrality and Global Cooperation
Both landlocked nations hold a distinct diplomatic identity: positive permanent neutrality. Foreign Minister Meredov and Chairperson Schwarz-Fuchs emphasized their nations’ alignment on international security, peaceful conflict resolution, and sustainable development.
During the foreign ministry meeting, both sides underscored the value of close collaboration within major international frameworks, notably the United Nations (UN) and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). The meeting built upon sustained high-level contacts, referencing previous exchanges between Turkmenistan’s leadership—including National Leader Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov (Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty) and President Serdar Berdimuhamedov—and the Federal President of the Republic of Austria.
Beyond bilateral diplomacy, the discussions spanned key regional matters, including strengthening the partnership between foreign ministries and deepening ties through legislative diplomacy.
Business Focus: 30+ Austrian Executives Join the Mission
While parliamentary relations provided the framework, trade served as the engine of the delegation’s visit. Schwarz-Fuchs arrived in Ashgabat backed by a prominent business trade mission featuring corporate executives and representatives from more than 30 Austrian companies.
As Turkmenistan continues to expand its transport-logistics networks, agricultural sector, and energy infrastructure, Austrian firms—renowned for technology in renewable energy, water management, industrial machinery, and infrastructure—are positioning themselves as technical partners.
Prior to meeting with Foreign Minister Meredov, the Austrian delegation was received at the Mejlis (Parliament) of Turkmenistan by Speaker Dunya Gozel Gulmanova. Talks centered on:
- Interparliamentary Cooperation Groups: Enhancing direct legislative exchanges and policy sharing.
- Sectoral Engagement: Expanding trade in transport, logistics, infrastructure, environmental tech, and agriculture.
- Specialized Committees: Activating joint initiatives among parliamentary committees, including platforms for women and youth parliamentarians.
Looking Ahead
As diplomatic talks concluded in Ashgabat, both sides reaffirmed their intent to convert diplomatic goodwill into economic results. Through interparliamentary channels and business matchmaking, Austria and Turkmenistan are strengthening a pragmatic partnership built on political neutrality, commercial opportunities, and diplomatic collaboration. /// nCa, 4 November 2026
