On 26 and 28 August 2026, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Turkmenistan organized a series of consultation meetings to provide technical support to the Government of Turkmenistan in reviewing, completing, and preparing for the official submission of the United Nations Fourteenth Inquiry among Governments on Population and Development. Key representatives from national ministries and departments of Turkmenistan participated in the working consultations held at the UN Building in Ashgabat.
The UN Inquiry among Governments on Population and Development has been conducted regularly by the UN Secretariat since 1963 in accordance with a General Assembly mandate. It serves as the primary global tool for collecting and disseminating comparable data on national demographic strategies, policies, and programs in the context of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Program of Action. The collected information is essential for global monitoring of progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
During the technical sessions, participants thoroughly reviewed the regulatory framework and practical data to complete the four thematic modules of the 14th Inquiry:
- The first module covered population trends, pension legislation, and measures promoting healthy ageing.
- The second module focused on spatial population distribution, rural development, urbanization, and disaster risk reduction.
- The third module addressed fertility, maternal health, access to modern contraceptives, and reproductive health issues.
- The fourth module covered international migration governance mechanisms, protection of migrants’ rights, and combatting human trafficking.
The consultations fostered an inter-agency approach and enabled the preparation of coordinated draft completed questionnaires for subsequent official endorsement and submission to the UN Secretariat on behalf of the Government of Turkmenistan. ///nCa, 28 August 2026 (in cooperation with UNFPA Turkmenistan)
