The Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Investment (ACCI) has dispatched a delegation to Turkmenistan for a series of talks aimed at boosting bilateral economic cooperation, increasing trade volumes, and developing new supply chains, ToloNews reports.
During the visit, representatives of the Afghan business community met with the leadership of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Turkmenistan, diplomats from the Embassy of Afghanistan, as well as heads of the country’s railway and transit authorities.
In the course of the negotiations, the Afghan side proposed launching a new transit corridor that would connect the city of Turkmenabat in eastern Turkmenistan with the northern provinces of Afghanistan and the major economic hub of Mazar-i-Sharif.
Ehsanullah Ehsan, Director of Public Relations at ACCI, noted that the key goal “to create opportunities for cooperation not only with Turkmenistan but also with other countries—those that need Afghan goods or whose markets we need access to—so that we can connect Afghanistan’s private sector with the private sectors of these countries.”
During the talks, the Afghan side invited Turkmenistan to send a business mission of 100 entrepreneurs and investors to Kabul. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Turkmenistan supported the initiative, confirming its readiness to organize the visit and expand economic partnership.
Economic analysts surveyed by ToloNews emphasize the special strategic importance of cooperation with Ashgabat against the backdrop of the current situation in the region.
Analyst Mohammad Nabi Afghan pointed out that partnership with Turkmenistan is of key importance for covering the energy deficit. In his view, amid regional instability and ongoing conflicts, Turkmenistan is capable of becoming a reliable supplier of oil and gas to Afghanistan.
Expert Qutbuddin Yaqubi noted that Turkmenistan leverages its geographic location and the operational Aqina and Torghundi border checkpoints to maintain trade relations with Afghanistan. In his assessment, such visits contribute to the further strengthening of the economic partnership between the two countries.
