14 August 2026, Ashgabat – A major event celebrating International Youth Day took place at the sports complex of the Ashgabat Olympic Complex. The event was jointly organized by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Turkmenistan and the State Committee of Turkmenistan for Physical Culture and Sport.
Observed annually on 12 August, International Youth Day draws attention to the realities and opportunities facing young men and women in today’s world, as well as their role in building a sustainable society. The global theme for 2026, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” emphasizes that despite differences in socioeconomic, cultural, and geographic conditions, young people share common hopes for decent work, quality education, equal rights and opportunities, a healthy lifestyle, and a sustainable future.
The event opened with welcoming remarks by Kemal Goshliyev, Head of the UNFPA Office in Turkmenistan, and Shamurad Seryayev, representative of the State Committee of Turkmenistan for Physical Culture and Sport. Highlighting the active role of youth, Kemal Goshliyev noted: “It is noteworthy that this event was planned, organized, and run by young people themselves. In line with this year’s theme, the direct and full participation of youth in decision-making is a key driver of change and a vital contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.”
This year, the event brought together over 200 young people from diverse backgrounds and fields. The program featured a roundtable discussion titled “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” bringing together inspiring young people from various sectors: IT innovator Merjen Saparmuradova, blogger Aylar Hojamuhammedova, athlete Timur Gulmyradov, famous singer Dovran Shammyyev, filmmaker Erkin Yazov, and inclusion educator Shabibi Osmanova. The speakers shared their stories of success, overcoming stereotypes, professional development, and personal growth, demonstrating that perseverance and the drive for self-realization know no boundaries.
Following the roundtable, participants explored thematic stations, joining discussions on digital technology and AI, gender equality, reproductive health, climate action, career orientation, arts and sports, as well as youth entrepreneurship and innovation.
Adding vibrancy and energy to the event, the celebration featured a musical performance by Aylar Hojamuhammedova accompanied by a dance group, an impressive performance by young gymnasts from the Sports School of the Main Directorate of Physical Culture and Sport of Ashgabat, and an energetic flash mob led by UNFPA volunteers that brought participants together in a shared burst of inspiration.

International Youth Day 2026 in Ashgabat was not just a celebration, but an important practical platform that opens new horizons for young people in Turkmenistan to engage in dialogue, grow, and participate equally in building a sustainable society. ///nCa, 14 August 2026 (in cooperation with UNFPA Turkmenistan)
