Kostroma is one of the most charming and authentic cities along Russia’s famous Golden Ring route. Nestled on the banks of the Volga River, it harmoniously blends a majestic history with unique cultural landmarks.
Furthermore, Kostroma rightfully holds two distinctive unofficial titles. The city is celebrated as the birthplace of Snegurochka (the Snow Maiden). It is home to the famous Snegurochka’s Tower and its picturesque courtyard. Here, the fairy tale lives year-round, and anyone is welcome to visit Grandfather Frost’s granddaughter to immerse themselves in an atmosphere of magic.
Beyond its folklore, the city is renowned for its craftsmanship—today, one-third of all Russian jewelers live and work in Kostroma.
The official founding date of the city is recognized as 1152, credited to Prince Yuri Dolgoruky. Although historians still debate Kostroma’s exact age, its ancient streets and monasteries preserve the spirit of many centuries.
For now, let us admire the natural beauty of Kostroma and the diverse birdlife (ornithofauna) of this wonderful Russian region.
