Ashgabat hosted to a unique evening organized by the British Embassy in Turkmenistan, transporting guests straight to the heart of the Scottish Highlands. The centerpiece of the event was a night of traditional Ceilidh dancing.
The musical atmosphere was set by Ghillie Dhu, one of Scotland’s premier folk bands based in Edinburgh. Thanks to their step-by-step guidance through seemingly complex moves, every guest was able to take to the floor and join the festivities—it was a vibrant whirlwind of people, laughter, emotion, and the swirling patterns of traditional Scottish tartan.
During the official portion of the event, the British Ambassador to Turkmenistan, Stephen Conlon, and the Minister of Culture of Turkmenistan, Atageldy Shamuradov, emphasized the importance of such cultural exchanges.
Following the dance marathon, guests were invited to sample classic Scottish fare, where the legendary Haggis was the undisputed star of the table. A national dish of savory pudding containing sheep’s pluck with oatmeal and spices, it is more than just food—it is a symbol of national pride.
Before the feast began, the famous ode “To a Haggis” by the great poet Robert Burns was recited. The reading added a special sense of ceremony to the evening, allowing guests to experience Scotland’s centuries-old literary heritage. ///nCa, 21 February 2026
