On 29 August 2025, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov and President of the Republic of Korea Lee Jae Myung had a telephone conversation, TDH reports.
President Lee Jae Myung stressed the great importance attached in the Republic of Korea to building up multifaceted cooperation with Turkmenistan. He noted the significant contribution of the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to the strengthening of bilateral relations.
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov emphasized that strengthening bilateral cooperation is one of the priorities of Turkmenistan’s foreign policy.
The conversation placed particular emphasis on the notable achievements in trade and economic cooperation. For many years, Turkmenistan has maintained active and fruitful collaboration with leading South Korean companies, including Hyundai, Daewoo, and LG. Their involvement has facilitated the realization of several large-scale initiatives that stand as significant milestones in the country’s economic development.
Among the most notable projects realized with the participation of Korean companies were the following:
– The gas chemical complex in Balkan province, valued at over $3.4 billion, with an annual output of 386,000 tons of polyethylene and 81,000 tons of polypropylene.
– The commercial gas desulfurization plant at the Galkynysh field, designed to process up to 10 billion cubic meters per year, with a project cost exceeding $1.484 billion.
– The production complex within the Turkmenabat Chemical Plant named after S.A. Niyazov, aimed at manufacturing 350,000 tons of superphosphate and 100,000 tons of ammonium sulfate annually, at a total investment of $682 million.
President Lee Jae Myung expressed sincere appreciation to the Turkmen side for fostering favorable conditions for Korean companies, underscoring their substantial contribution to shared accomplishments.
In addition to bilateral relations, the parties also discussed cooperation within the framework of multilateral formats such as the United Nations. At the same time, Turkmenistan and Korea cooperate at the regional level in the “Central Asia–Republic of Korea” format, which contributes to the intensification of cooperation in such areas as energy, transport, ecology, healthcare and culture.
In addition, the Presidents touched upon the cultural and humanitarian sphere. The Korean language is being actively studied in Turkmenistan, and mutual Cultural Days are being held, which helps strengthen ties between peoples.
Concluding the dialogue, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov extended an invitation to his Korean counterpart to attend the upcoming international forum in Ashgabat on 12 December. The event will mark the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s neutrality and highlight the designation of 2025 as the International Year of Peace and Trust, an initiative proposed by Ashgabat. President Lee Jae Myung expressed gratitude for the invitation and underscored the international community’s high regard for Turkmenistan’s peace-loving policy. ///nCa, 30 August 2025
