From 6 April to 11 April 2026, Almaty hosted the continental Asian stage of the World Schools Team Championship, organized by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and the International School Chess Federation (ISCF).
The competition featured 26 teams representing 19 Asian countries. Turkmenistan was represented at this prestigious tournament by a team from the Joint Turkmen-Russian Secondary School named after A.S. Pushkin.
Based on the final results of the team championship, Osman Hamrakuliyev secured 3rd place on the first board. First place in this category went to the young International Master from the Kurchatov School (Moscow, Russia), Roman Shogdzhiev (FIDE rating: 2399).
Osman is a 7th-grade student at the Turkmen-Russian School named after A.S. Pushkin. He has been playing chess since the age of 5 and is coached by Grandmaster Maksat Atabayev.
Tournament Regulations and Program
- Team Composition: Each team consisted of four main players, one reserve, and an adult captain.
- Gender Requirement: According to the tournament rules, each team had to include at least one boy and one girl.
- Age Groups: The competition was open to athletes born between 1 January 2012 and 31 December 2018.
In addition to the tournament rounds, the program included masterclasses from Grandmasters and coaches, educational sessions for teachers and parents, interactive workshops, and a cultural program.
Turkmenistan’s participation in this event is significant, as integrating chess into the school curriculum is one of the primary strategic goals of the country’s National Chess Federation.
