On 10 April 2026, during an off-site meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan in Lebap province, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs Rashid Meredov briefed President Serdar Berdimuhamedov on the preparations for the upcoming meeting of the Turkmen-Chinese Intergovernmental Cooperation Committee.
The meeting is scheduled to take place on 16 April 2026 in Ashgabat, Meredov announced.
The committee’s subcommittees continue to operate on a regular basis, including via videoconference.
Recent sessions have been held by the subcommittees on security (January 2025), trade and economic cooperation (July 2025), humanitarian cooperation (March 2026, Beijing), and the transport and logistics sector (April 2026). Meetings for the subcommittees on energy and scientific-technical cooperation are planned for the second half of 2026.
The upcoming 7th meeting will focus on priority areas of the strategic partnership between the two nations. Key topics for discussion include:
- Security cooperation, specifically addressing cyber and biological security;
- Energy partnership, involving new projects for the development of strategically important gas fields;
- Transport and logistics, including the modernization of railway infrastructure and the activation of corridors along the routes: China–Turkmenistan–Caspian Sea–Europe, and Turkmenistan–China–South and East Asia–Asia-Pacific region;
- Digitalization and communication, focusing on information and communication technologies and artificial intelligence;
- Agricultural cooperation;
- Education and science, emphasizing experience exchange and professional training in scientific and technical fields.
Following the meeting, the sides are expected to sign a Protocol and several other documents aimed at strengthening the legal framework of Turkmen-Chinese relations.
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov emphasized the significance of the recent friendly visit to the People’s Republic of China by the National Leader of the Turkmen people and Chairman of the Halk Maslakhaty, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, and instructed officials to ensure a high organizational level for the committee meeting.
