A series of high-level diplomatic meetings took place on 21 Jan 2026 in Ashgabat aimed at significantly expanding the strategic partnership between Turkmenistan and the Republic of India.
The key events included talks between Turkmenistan’s Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov and the Indian delegation, as well as the next round of bilateral political consultations.
During the meeting between Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov and India’s Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs, Sibi George, both sides reaffirmed that trust-based dialogue at the highest political level remains the cornerstone of bilateral relations. The diplomats discussed in detail the schedule of upcoming visits and expressed readiness to organize a meeting between the two countries’ foreign ministers in the near future.
Particular attention was given to coordinating positions within the United Nations and other international organizations, where Ashgabat and New Delhi traditionally demonstrate close alignment.
Later in the day, inter-ministerial political consultations were held under the co-chairmanship of Turkmenistan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Myahri Byashimova and Sibi George.
The agenda covered a broad range of strategic areas, including energy, transport, agriculture, and enhanced cooperation between private sector businesses of the two countries.
Discussing trade and economic ties, both sides expressed mutual interest in deepening cooperation in this field. They highlighted the important role of the Joint Turkmen-Indian Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technological Cooperation.
The diplomats also highly commended the successful development of bilateral relations in science, education, and culture. A number of joint events are planned for the current year. ///nCa, 22 January 2026
