
On 18 December 2025, the National Leader of Turkmen people Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov held a meeting with John Reese, President of the U.S.-based Nicklaus Companies, a global leader in golf course design and brand management, associated with legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus.
The discussion highlighted ongoing cooperation in sports infrastructure and potential new projects to boost tourism and golf in Turkmenistan.
Reese expressed admiration for Turkmenistan’s socioeconomic progress and the striking architecture of its capital, Ashgabat, which he said always leaves a lasting impression. He also congratulated Berdimuhamedov on the recent international celebrations marking the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality.
In turn, Berdimuhamedov noted that the milestone had been widely commemorated, underscoring Turkmenistan’s commitment to neutrality as a foundation for peace and development.
The sides emphasized sports and tourism as key pillars of sustainable growth. Turkmenistan is actively building modern facilities that meet international standards, with a focus on ecology and innovation.
A prime example of successful collaboration is the Ashgabat Golf Club, designed by Nicklaus Companies. The Club with the 18-hole championship course was opened in 2017.)
Berdimuhamedov expressed confidence in further mutually beneficial partnerships, particularly in developing golf facilities at the Awaza National Tourist Zone on the Caspian Sea coast. Awaza, a rapidly developing resort area with luxury hotels and beaches, aims to become a premier destination for sports and leisure tourism.
