On 24 February 2026, the Minister of Railway Transport of Turkmenistan, Mammet Akmammedov, held a meeting with Edvardas Bumšteinas, Head of the European Investment Bank (EIB) Division for Asia, Central Asia, and the Pacific.
According to the ministry, the main topic of the meeting was cooperation in modernizing Turkmenistan’s railway infrastructure.
In particular, the parties reviewed the prospects for EIB financing for the modernization of the digital railway system. This project is vital for ensuring transparency in freight transport, as well as removing barriers to infrastructure connectivity and increasing transit potential.
Furthermore, the sides discussed possibilities for attracting EIB credit funds to implement several promising projects. These include plans to increase freight capacity and the procurement of spare parts for wagons, locomotives, and communication equipment.
Another area for potential EIB financing is the modernization of the existing Ashgabat–Dashoguz railway line. Specifically, discussions touched upon the possibility of allocating grant funds for the preparation of a Feasibility Study (FS) for this project.
Earlier, EIB representatives held a meeting at the Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan.
