ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan, 27 March 2026 – The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Regional Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Ms. Florence Bauer, conducted a mission to Turkmenistan from 25–27 March 2026. The visit was organized around the Inter-parliamentary Dialogue to strengthen legislative frameworks to ensure progress on gender equality and gender-based violence.
During the mission, Ms. Bauer addressed the opening session of the Inter-parliamentary Dialogue, emphasizing the critical role of parliamentarians in translating international human rights treaties into tangible national legislative frameworks that protect women and girls from all forms of violence. She highlighted that moving beyond the ratification to active parliamentary oversight and accountability is essential for ensuring the rights and health of every woman and young person is fulfilled.


“Advancing gender equality is a social and human rights obligation. It is also a fundamental prerequisite for building the inclusive, resilient, and stable societies we all strive for,” said Ms. Florence Bauer at the opening.
The mission included a high-level meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister for Health, Science, Education, Sports, Youth and Social Affairs of Turkmenistan, Mr. Batyr Mammedov. The Regional Director also met Ms. Myahri Bashimova, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. Discussions focused on the implementation of the sixth UNFPA Country Programme (2026–2030), reaffirming the shared commitment to advancing national priorities through strategic partnership and sustained cooperation for the well-being of the population.
In addition, Ms. Bauer visited the gynecology department of the Scientific and Clinical Center for Maternal and Child Health where alongside visiting Members of Parliament, she interacted with health workers in the newly opened rape crisis centre, which aims to provide survivor-centered health services to women and girls who experience sexual violence.
