Italian company Saipem has been awarded a licensing contract for urea production at a new fertilizer plant in Turkmenistan, currently being constructed by Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. (MHI).
The contract includes the licensing of Saipem’s proprietary Urea Snamprogetti™ technology, along with related engineering services. The urea plant will have a capacity of 3,500 tons per day and is designed to meet the highest standards of efficiency, reliability, and safety.
This is not the first time Saipem has deployed its technology in the country. The Urea Snamprogetti™ process is already in use at the Garabogazkarbamid plant, commissioned in 2018 in Garabogaz. That facility was also built with the involvement of Mitsubishi and Gap Insaat Yatirim ve Dis Ticaret AS.
The new contract reinforces Saipem’s leadership in the fertilizer sector, confirming the reliability and high performance of the Urea Snamprogetti™ technology, which is currently utilized at 147 facilities worldwide.
The Snamprogetti™ urea production technology is a highly efficient process for synthesizing urea from ammonia and carbon dioxide under high pressure (approximately 140 bar) and temperature. Key features include energy consumption optimization and low emissions, ensuring minimal environmental impact. /// nCa, 25 March 2026
