President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev paid a state visit to Pakistan. On 4 February 2026, summit talks took place in Islamabad between Tokayev and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. This marks the first visit by Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to Pakistan as President. Furthermore, the visit carries symbolic significance as it coincided with the 34th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Kazakhstan and Pakistan.
The main outcome of the summit was the signing of a Joint Declaration on the establishing strategic partnership between the Republic of Kazakhstan and …. The document opens broad prospects for cooperation in areas such as: political dialogue; security and defense; trade, economy, and investment; transport and logistics; education, science, and information technologies; culture, media, sports, and tourism; climate change and environmental protection coordination; as well as cooperation at regional and international levels.
During the visit of the President of Kazakhstan, 37 bilateral documents of various levels were signed with Pakistan, including:
- Memoranda of cooperation in mining, artificial intelligence and digitalization, healthcare, climate change, and environmental protection;
- Memoranda in the fields of transport, logistics, education, Islamic finance, and UN peacekeeping;
- Agreements on transit trade, customs cooperation, plant quarantine, and veterinary matters;
- An extradition treaty.
In addition, during the Kazakhstan-Pakistani business forum attended by more than 250 companies, over 30 commercial agreements were concluded worth approximately US $ 200 million in the areas of finance, logistics, industry, energy, agro-industrial complex, digitalization, and infrastructure.
President Tokayev noted the rapid growth in trade: last year, bilateral trade turnover doubled. The parties agreed to take measures to achieve the goal of 1 billion dollars in the near future. The Roadmap for trade and economic cooperation for 2025–2027 is being implemented.
Shehbaz Sharif also emphasized that Pakistan regards Kazakhstan as a “strategic and one of the most valued partners in Central Asia”.
“I am absolutely confident that with our collaboration and discussion today, with productive, encouraging outcomes and this signing ceremony, we will not only reinvigorate our relations but also give a huge impetus to our bilateral ties,” said the Prime Minister of Pakistan.
Particular attention was paid to transport and logistics cooperation: the leaders of the two countries expressed firm commitment to further developing international multimodal transport corridors between Kazakhstan and Pakistan along the routes:
- Kazakhstan – Turkmenistan – Afghanistan – Pakistan,
- Kazakhstan – Uzbekistan – Afghanistan – Pakistan,
- as well as Kazakhstan – Kyrgyzstan – China – Pakistan.
Shehbaz Sharif welcomed President Tokayev’s initiative to connect Central and South Asia through the construction of the Trans-Afghan railway corridor. In this regard, the relevant agencies have been instructed to study the development of the railway line Kazakhstan – Turkmenistan – Afghanistan – Pakistan.
Regarding the energy sector, President Tokayev said that the two “exchanged views on the prospects of Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India TAPI gas pipeline”.
In the agro-industrial complex, agreements were signed to expand trade and establish joint production facilities. Kazakhstan invited Pakistani companies to invest in agricultural processing, pharmaceuticals, and construction materials.
The parties confirmed their readiness to cooperate in the fields of artificial intelligence, digital technologies, and Islamic finance (the Astana International Financial Centre has created conditions for halal finance).
During the visit, a joint investment platform was established between Samruk-Kazyna and the Fauji Foundation. “Kazakhstan is ready to offer Pakistani investors the most favorable conditions,” Tokayev stated.
An agreement was reached to expand partnership in the defense industry, while interaction between the security and law enforcement agencies of Kazakhstan and Pakistan is already developing dynamically.
On the international agenda, emphasis was placed on joint efforts for peace and security. “We expressed concern over ongoing conflicts in various regions of the world. Our positions on many current issues coincide, and we are convinced that any conflicts must be resolved on the basis of dialogue and diplomatic efforts,” President of Kazakhstan noted at the final press conference.
The parties signed an Intergovernmental Memorandum on joint participation in UN peacekeeping missions, laying the foundation for expanding partnership in international peacekeeping activities.
President Tokayev expressed gratitude for the hospitality and invited Prime Minister Sharif to visit Kazakhstan this year.
During the visit, President of Kazakhstan was conferred Pakistan’s highest state decoration – the Nishan-e-Pakistan order. This award is given to citizens of Pakistan as well as foreign statesmen, political and public figures for exceptional services to the country.///nCa, 5 February 2026
