On 29 January 2026, a meeting was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan between Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov and the deputy foreign minister of Russia, Mikhail Galuzin.
During the talks, the parties discussed topical issues on the bilateral agenda, including the schedule of upcoming inter-state contacts, avenues for further developing trade and economic cooperation, and the implementation of joint projects in the cultural, humanitarian, and educational spheres.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to the consistent advancement of comprehensive cooperation in the spirit of an enhanced strategic partnership.
Galuzin commended Turkmenistan’s activities on the international stage, carried out in accordance with the country’s status of permanent neutrality.
The Russian side expressed its full readiness to assist Turkmenistan during its chairmanship of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in 2026—a year marking the 35th anniversary of the organization.
The parties exchanged views on regional and international issues, noting the high level of foreign policy coordination between Russia and Turkmenistan across major multilateral platforms, including the UN, CIS, Caspian states formats, and the “Central Asia – Russia” framework.
Political Consultations
On the same day, Turkmen-Russian political consultations took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, chaired by Turkmenistan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Ahmed Gurbanov and his Russian counterpart Mikhail Galuzin.
The meeting focused on developing practical joint steps to intensify inter-state political dialogue, expand trade and economic cooperation, and implement bilateral projects in the cultural, humanitarian, and educational sectors.
In the context of regional and international issues, the parties emphasized the importance of continued efforts to broaden foreign policy coordination on major multilateral stages.
Security Consultations
According to the Russian foreign ministry, Galuzin also led the Russian delegation at the 4th high-level inter-agency consultations on regional security.
The sides assessed the current situation in Central Asia and neighbor regions. They discussed opportunities to increase joint efforts in countering modern challenges and threats, as well as expanding cooperation in the fields of information and biological security. /// nCa, 29 January 2026
