On 23 January, National Leader of the Turkmen People and Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov met with U.S. Special Envoy for South and Central Asia and Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, according to state news agency TDH.
The U.S. diplomat thanked Arkadag Berdimuhamedov for the meeting and noted the ongoing development of relations between the United States and Turkmenistan. He said that his earlier discussions with President Serdar Berdimuhamedov during the visit could help advance bilateral engagement.
Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov stated that Turkmenistan attaches importance to ties with the United States in various areas. He described the U.S. as one of the country’s strategic partners and referenced President Serdar Berdimuhamedov’s November 2025 visit to Washington for the Central Asia–United States summit.
The two sides noted that bilateral relations continue to develop in the political-diplomatic, trade-economic, and cultural-humanitarian spheres.

The visit by Sergio Gor, along with U.S. Secretary of the Army Daniel Driscoll, took place in Turkmenistan on 22–23 January 2026. According to the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, Gor and Driscoll held meetings with Turkmenistan’s Defense Minister Begench Gundogdyev and Deputy Prime Minister,Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov.
