Real winter has finally arrived in Ashgabat: on the night of 21 January 2026, the capital of Turkmenistan saw its first snowfall of the season.
Residents and visitors awoke to a scene unusual for the southern capital—streets, parks, and majestic white-marble buildings were covered in a thin layer of fluffy snow, creating a true winter atmosphere in a city where snow is a rare guest.
According to meteorologists, daytime temperatures today dropped to between -1 and -3 °C, with a light frost of -2 to -4 °C expected tonight.
For Ashgabat, where January often passes with above-freezing temperatures and scant precipitation, this event was a pleasant surprise. Many citizens took to the streets to capture the rare sight.
While precipitation is expected to gradually ease in the coming days, the cold snap may linger.///nCa, 21 January 2026
