Turkmenistan is interested in expanding the presence of UN specialized agencies, structural units and programs in its country. This was stated at a meeting on 8 January 2026, between Turkmenistan Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov and UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan Dmitry Shlapachenko.
During the meeting, the parties discussed a wide range of issues related to the strategic partnership between Turkmenistan and the United Nations, according to the Turkmen Foreign Ministry.
In particular, the parties addressed issues related to the implementation of the new Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework between the Government of. Turkmenistan and the United Nations in 2026-2030. They also discussed the process of summarizing the results of the previous Cooperation Framework for 2021–2025.
The importance of the work of the Steering Committee for the implementation of this Cooperation Framework was emphasized.
Furthermore, the parties reviewed the progress of UN program and project activities in Turkmenistan. It was noted that dozens of projects and programs are currently being implemented within the framework of the signed documents, both bilaterally and regionally.
According to the press release, Turkmenistan and the UN system will host a number of significant joint events in the near future, including a joint conference with the FAO, courses for young diplomats, and more. ///nCa, 8 January 2026
