ASHGABAT — President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia and President Masoud Pezeshkian of Iran met here on Friday to accelerate implementation of their comprehensive strategic partnership, with both leaders emphasizing mutual support against Western sanctions.
The meeting on the sidelines of an international peace forum highlighted growing economic ties between Moscow and Tehran, with trade increasing 13 percent last year and another 8 percent in the first nine months of this year.
Mr. Putin described the long-term strategic partnership treaty signed in January as a “turning point” in bilateral relations. Mr. Pezeshkian pressed for swift action, saying Iran would complete domestic preparations for major corridor projects by year’s end and urging Russia to finalize its contributions.
“We are determined to put into effect and operationalize the agreement we have signed,” Mr. Pezeshkian said, according to Iranian officials.
The leaders discussed ongoing collaboration in power plant construction, including the Bushehr nuclear facility, transport corridors, and new mechanisms for supplying gas and electricity to Iran. Mr. Putin said negotiations on energy cooperation were progressing well and cited agricultural collaboration as a successful model for expansion.
Mr. Putin reaffirmed Russia’s consistent support for Iran at the United Nations, particularly on nuclear issues, stating that such backing “will continue.” He emphasized close coordination with Tehran on Iran’s nuclear program. Mr. Pezeshkian expressed gratitude for Russia’s international support.
Both leaders committed to joint action through the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, BRICS, and other platforms to counter what they described as unilateralism and illegal Western sanctions affecting both countries.
Mr. Putin requested that his “warm greetings” be conveyed to Iran’s Supreme Leader. While no new agreements were announced, both sides pledged to accelerate implementation of existing pacts. /// nCa, 13 December 2025
