About Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are usually fixed-wing unpiloted aircraft but some UAVs are rotorcraft. They can be remote controlled or fly autonomously on pre-programmed flight plans.

UAVs are primarily used for in military assignments such as intelligence gathering, reconnaissance and attack but the technological advancement and miniaturization has made it possible to assign diverse civil roles to UAVs.

For instance, a properly rigged UAV can aid in firefighting, police observation in civil disturbance, monitoring of crime scenes, chase suspect vehicles, search of lost persons in desert, forest or sea, and uninterrupted reconnaissance in natural disasters.

UAV is also called UAS (Unmanned Aircraft System) to highlight the fact that it is not just an aircraft but a system including ground control and other elements.

An armed UAV is known as UCAV (Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle).
