Turkmenistan Elected Deputy Chair of UN General Assembly

Ashgabat, 24 July 2007 (nCa) --- Turkmenistan has been elected to one of the five rotating deputy chairs of the United Nations General Assembly.

The information was conveyed Monday by Vladimir Goryaev, Deputy Director of the Asia and the Pacific Division in the Department of Political Affairs of the UN Secretariat in a meeting with President Berdymuhamedov. The meeting took place at Hazar palace at Turkmenbashy, the Caspian port city of Turkmenistan.

Goryaev said that election of Turkmenistan to the deputy chair was a proof of the international recognition of the progressive and constructive policies under the new president of neutral Turkmenistan.

He expressed confidence that the neutrality of Turkmenistan will serve as an important factor for the security and sustainable development of the Central Asian region.

President Berdymuhamedov said that Turkmenistan will continue to adhere to its doctrine of permanent neutrality and use its political, economic and cultural potential for the common benefit of the entire mankind. He added that Turkmenistan will maintain active cooperation with the United Nations.
