Azerbaijan to Close Russian, Turkish TV Channels
Ashgabat, 9 July 2007 (nCa) --- Reports from Baku suggest that Azerbaijan is likely to close down transmissions of some foreign channels.
Azeri Press Agency reports that a tender will soon be announced for a new TV channel which would broadcast on the frequency of Turkish Samanyolu (STV). The tender would be floated on 17 July 2007.
If tender proceedings go according to schedule, STV would have to close down its transmissions from 17 September 2007
Meanwhile, Russian news agency RIA Novosti reports from Baku that state broadcasting council of Azerbaijan has decided to pull down the transmissions of two widely popular Russian channels – Channel One (ORT) and Sossiya (RTR).
Transmissions of ORT would go off air on 11 July 2007 and RTR would follow suit in August.
The reason cited by the Azeri government for closure of Russian and Turkish channels is that they don’t transmit Azerbaijani programmes.
The announcement to do away with some foreign TV channels came on the heels of Azeri decision to stop importing natural gas from Russia, after Russian state gas monopoly Gazprom's increased its gas prices by more than double to the post-Soviet neighbor.
Iranian TV channels are also facing difficulties in beaming their transmissions into Azerbaijan.
