Turkmenistan, Tajikistan for Expanded Cooperation

Ashgabat, 14 February 2008 (nCa) --- Turkmenistan and Tajikistan are going to increase mutual cooperation in a number of areas.

In a meeting Wednesday with Sherali Gulov, Tajik minister for energy and industry, President Berdymuhamedov said that full potential for mutually beneficial interaction must be tapped.

The sides discussed a number of questions including cooperation in transport-communication and settlement of debts owed by Tajikistan to Turkmenistan.

Meanwhile, the first session of the joint Turkmen-Tajik commission took place in Ashgabat. Sherali Gulov led the Tajik delegation while Turkmen delegation was led by G Annaveliyev, minister for energy and industry.

The agenda featured a broad range of issues that are considered potential areas for cooperation such as power generation, industry, agriculture, transportation, science and education, culture, public healthcare services, sports and tourism.

It was decided that chambers of commerce and industry of both the countries would maintain close liaison through business forums, seminars, exhibitions etc.

The sides started drafting agreement for cooperation in the field of energy industry.

A protocol for cooperation was signed at the end of the meeting.

The next session of the commission would held in Dushanbe.
