Turkmen Electricity Deal Solves Winter Energy Problems of Tajikistan
Ashgabat, 29 July 2007 (nCa) --- Tajikistan has signed a deal with Turkmenistan to purchase one billion kilowatt hours of electricity annually. This would help overcome the power shortage in the winter months.
According to the terms specified in a decree signed by President Berdymuhamedov, state power engineering corporation of the ministry of energy and industry of Turkmenistan will sign a three-year contract with the Tajik Aluminum Company (Talco) and joint stock company Barq-e-Tajik (Tajik Electricity) for export of one billion kilowatt hours of electricity annually (+/- 20%).
The agreed price is 2.1 cents per kilowatt hour, which is a fraction of the price that the US company Halliburton charges for supplying electricity to war torn Iraq.
According to Tajik sources, the agreement Turkmenistan will supply one billion kilowatt hours of electric energy from October 2007 to April 2008.
The common transmission system of Central Asia must be repaired and reactivated for Turkmen electricity to reach Tajikistan. Turkmenistan has promised to help repair some sections of the network that pass through Uzbekistan.
The Tajik sources say that 100% advance payment would be made for purchase of electricity.
