China oil imports via Kazakhstan pipeline over 4 mln tons to date
BEIJING, 11 July 2007 --- China has imported 4.06 mln tons of crude oil via the China-Kazakhstan pipeline since it entered commercial operations on July 11, 2006, or exactly one year ago, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
China and Kazakhstan invested a combined 700 mln usd in the 962.2-kilometer Atasu to Alashankou pipeline which was completed in November 2005.
The pipeline is ultimately designed for 20 mln tons of crude oil per annum, with annual output at 10 mln tons in its initial phases.
China and Kazakhstan have agreed to expand an existing crude pipeline linking fields in the Caspian Sea with China's western regions, Xinhua reported earlier.
China National Petroleum Corp, the parent of PetroChina, signed a preliminary agreement with state oil company KazMunaiGaz for phase II of the Sino-Kazakhstan oil pipeline during President Nursultan Nazarbayev's state visit in Beijing at the end of 2006.
